Installation of Aspell and the
Australian English Dictionary

NOTE: If you have reached this page directly, you may
wish to check out http://www.dictionary.justlocal.com.au first.

The following are notes we created to obtain and install Aspell.

Once Aspell is installed and the Australian English dictionary files are installed you can perform spell checking with a range of software. In particular we were interested in getting spell checking to work with the Opera browser.

The following are instructions on how to install Aspell 0.50.3.3. for Windows, plus one of the Australian English dictionary files we produce.

Click on the following link and download the file to your Desktop.

http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/w32/Aspell-0-50-3-3-Setup.exe

As Windows XP (and Vista) blocks executable files from running, you first need to Unblock the file.

Right click on the file you just downloaded
Select Properties
Click Unblock
Click OK

Double click on the file to run the installation program.

Step through the installation wizard. There are no options you need to change.

Aspell has now been installed in the folder C:\Program Files\Aspell.

We suggest that you now install the American dictionary to ensure everything is set up correctly. Then you can go on and install the Australian dictionary next.

Click on the following link and download the standard dictionary installation to your Desktop.

http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/w32/Aspell-en-0.50-2-3.exe

As Windows XP (and Vista) blocks executable files from running, you first need to Unblock the file.

Right click on the file you just downloaded
Select Properties
Click Unblock
Click OK

Double click on the file to run the installation program.

Step through the installation wizard. There are no options you need to change.

The dictionary files have now been installed.

A good way to check that everything has been installed correctly at this point is to download and install the Opera web browser. This browser uses Aspell for spell checking.

Use Opera and open the OpenOffice.org web page on JustLocal (www.JustLocal.com.au) and go to the feedback form. Right click on the form and do a spell check. If you can spell check then everything is working.

The next step is to install the Australian English dictionary files.

We prefer the "kelvin" version of the files, but you may wish to install the "full" version of the files.

Go to www.JustLocal.com.au
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the OpenOffice.org image.
Select Australian English dictionary files for Aspell.
Right click on Aspell_en_AU_V2.2.0_Kelvin.zip
Save the file to your Desktop
Double click on the zip file and use the wizard to extract the files to your Desktop. (This creates another folder your Desktop.)
When you click on Finish in the wizard the files will display.

You now need to copy the files to the correct location. (You could have also extracted the files direct to the below location.)
Copy the files en_AU-only.rws and en_AU.multi to C:\Program Files\Aspell\dict.

NOTE: In the past we found with a program we needed to set up the aspell.conf file to set the default dictionary. If this is required, copy the file aspell.conf to the folder C:\Program Files\Aspell. This is not required for the Opera browser.

To now use the Australian English dictionary files perform a spell check and select en_AU as the dictionary. From that point on when you next spell check the Australian English dictionary file will be used.
